Sesa Community Development Foundation

Sesa Goa is pioneer amongst mining companies in taking concrete initiatives towards meeting its Sustainable Development commitments and effectively utilising its reclaimed mine sites; setting new models. A case in hand is the formation of Sesa Community Development Foundation to foster the development of youth around Sesa Goa's areas of operations in Goa.

Sesa Community Development Foundation ("SCDF") - It represents Sesa Goa's social focus. This foundation runs Sesa Technical School which provides technical training to local students and Sesa Football Academy which nurtures future footballers from Goa. The junior football academy and the technical school is built on the reclaimed mine site at Sanquelim, a remarkable example of both environmental conservation and community development work which is unique in itself.

Sesa Technical School

The consistent track record of Sesa Technical School built over the years through dedicated efforts of our trainees and faculty strengthens our resolve to put more energy and resource to this institute which culminated in increasing the seats by 30% from the current year. We’re proud of our trainees who in turn are contributing to improve further the Human Development Indices (HDI) of Goa”. – Mr. PK Mukerjee (MD- Sesa Goa Limited)

Sesa Technical School ("STS")

Sesa Goa's vision is to enhance the quality of life & socio - economic well-being of communities in and around its operations; and contribute towards developing empowered and sustainable societies. As a part of this philosophy Sesa Goa has formed Sesa Community Development Foundation to foster the development of youth near the Company’s area of operations in Goa. This foundation runs Sesa Technical School and Sesa Football Academy. When most of the major mining operations of the Company were closed in Sanquelim in the early Ninety, the Company decided to effectively utilize the office building and workshop at the mining site and was converted to develop an Industrial Training Institute (ITI). Thus Sesa Technical School was born in 1994.

STS was developed with an aim to empower the Goan youths without academic brilliance and economic muscle, of the surrounding community, by imparting training in various technical skill sets, to cater to the needs of the industry. At present 128 trainees are undergoing training in the professions of Fitter, Machinist, Instrument Mechanic and Electrician. All courses of STS are National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT) affiliated with two year duration. Responses from aspiring trainees and from industries in absorbing them have been excellent till date.

Seeing the overwhelming response from the local youths of Goa and the excellent performance of STS, Sesa Goa decided to increase the intake of STS from 56 students per batch to 75 students per batch starting from the year 2010. The intake capacity for each trade is as below:

Sesa Technical Schools Intake Capacity

Trade Intake Capacity
Instrument Mechanics 20
Fitter 20
Electrician 20
Machinist 15
Total 75

Since the inception of STS, 16 batches have been rolled out making 726 young Goans employable till date on their own merit. Some of the passed out boys are holding senior positions today in the private sector.

RESULTS

Sesa Technical School today has become a leading Vocational Training Institute in Goa and has already an enviable record and reputation of identifying potential and nurturing excellence of young Goans. For the fifth consecutive year STS has maintained 100 per cent results in the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) trade test. An important accessory of Sesa Goa Limited in its CSR initiatives, STS has lived up to the expectations by imparting rigorous training in the trades of Fitter, Machinist, Instrument Mechanic and Electrician.

In 2010, all the 54 trainees of STS who appeared for the examination have passed the ITI test (All India Trade Test for Craftsman Training, July 2010 conducted by NCVT) with excellent performance and Goa’s Top 3 Rankers for the year 2010 are from Sesa Technical School, Sanquelim they are:

PLACEMENT RECORDS

Trainees of STS have been placed in various companies year after year- In fact, the trainees are picked up during the campus interview long before the results are out, which in itself is a mark of pride for the company.

Over the years STS has done Goa proud. A number of alumni's now hold important positions in major companies like

Since the inception of the school in 1994 about 726 such students have found gainful employment in major companies as skilled employees.

As a result of excellent training; it has became a practice of the prospective employers of surrounding industries to visit STS for campus interviews to choose their manpower requirement. STS arranges campus interviews and thus ensures that all the trainees get absorbed in industries after completion of theq course.

STS trainees have been always in high demand in last fifteen years for the purpose of employment.
