SAFETY at SESA is more than a set of precautions . SAFETY in the workplace, in our homes and in the communities in which we operate is our way of life . A CORPORATE SAFETY section coordinates efforts to achieve consistency across all Group Companies. Workplace SAFETY COMMITEES help in practical implementation and organize training of employees as well as ensuring good housekeeping.

To manage health and safety in an efficient, economical and consistent manner and to provide confidence in health and safety performance, Sesa Group has an occupational health and safety management system based on OHSAS 18001:1999 standard.

Sesa Goa's environmental management and ecorestoration programme dates back to 1957 and its effects can be viewed today at Sesa's original mine site at Orasso Dongor which now is a thriving Cashew orchard, benefiting the local village community .

Sesa Goa's Sanquelim mine is a horticultural demonstration site with coconut, banana, arecanut, jackfruit, rubber and a variety of medicinal plants growing in abundance. The flooded mine pit is a demonstration site for pisciculture.

The company operates a nursery in which 200,000 trees are grown annually. A project titled as ''Integrated Biotechnological approach for Mine Land Reclamation'' has recently been launched at the Codli Mines in collaboration with NEERI Nagpur, the Department of Biotechnology- Government of India and the University of Lund-Sweden . This project is establishing local tree species on overburden dumps using a Root trainer approach .

Sesa Goa's environmental activities include water and energy conservation and new and innovative approaches in mine land reclamation. Our Environmental Management System (EMS) is based on ISO guidelines. In 1996, the company was certified for ISO 14001 and was the first iron ore mining company in the world to be thus certified (See Limca Book of World Records).

At the Sesa Industries Pig Iron Plant, blast furnace gas is washed, scrubbed clean and burnt to produce electrical energy. The group will shortly set up a Power Plant on a BOO basis to generate electricity from the pig iron plant and the coke plant exhaust gases.
